Welcome to 6th Grade!

It's hard to believe it's August already and time for school to start back up again. I'm excited to welcome a new group of students to sixth grade. I love this grade level and really enjoy teaching math and science. I will be using this website to keep you informed of important things happening in my class and at Delaware. This will include: important dates, upcoming events and field trips and what we are currently learning in math and science class, including the standard(s) being taught. Speaking of standards, Indiana has adopted brand new standards for this school year. Those can be found by following this link: 2014-15 IN Standards

The first few days of school we will be focusing on SOAR rules and procedures, learning a little bit about each other and, of course, some paperwork, netbook and locker assignments, etc. By the middle of the week we will begin learning about our first math standard of the year: 6.C.1 - Divide multi-digit whole numbers fluently using a standard algorithmic approach. In science, we will begin learning about the scientific method and why scientists use it to create credible investigations that feature well supported evidence.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have about what we are doing in class. I'll do my best to keep this site updated as much as possible with current information. My goal is for you to always know what is going on in my class. An open line of communication is a great way to ensure student success and achievement. I look forward to working with both students and parents to ensure that this year is a success!

Astronomy Night

As we wrap up our science unit on Earth and Space Science, we are capping it off by hosting an Astronomy Night at Delaware School on Thursday, March 19 beginning at 6:30 PM. Representatives from the Evansville Astronomical Society will be here with a couple of high-powered telescopes that will allow us to view distant objects in the night sky. We hope to have a clear night so we are able to view the planets Jupiter and Venus, the Comet Lovejoy and more! We also plan to have some fun activities in the cafeteria while we wait for the sun to set before looking at the night sky. We hope you will join us on what is sure to be a fun and fascinating evening!

Fractions, Decimals & Percents

We recently finished up a couple of standards (IN 6.2.8 & IN 6.5.10) that dealt with decimals and percentages of quantities involving real-world money application (tax, tips, discounts). We will now begin learning how to convert between decimals, percents and fractions (IN 6.1.4) and finding the whole given a part and the percent (6.RP.3c). These are very challenging concepts for sixth graders. We will be revisiting and reviewing these standards throughout the year to ensure that they are mastered before ISTEP. You can help your child at home by discussing common decimal/fraction conversions such as: (1/4,=.25), (1/2=.50), (3/4 = .75), (1/3 = .33), etc. Relating these concepts to everyday activities such as cooking and dealing with money can really help children begin to master this concept.

Graduation Time!

It's hard to believe that the school year is almost over. Despite all of the standardized  testing, wild winter weather and all of those virtual makeup days, it's been a great year. I've truly enjoyed this year and I will miss the students and the relationships I've formed with them this past year. I wish everyone the best of luck at NJHS or whatever school you plan to attend next year. I hope you have learned not only a lot of math and science this year but also how to be a respectful, responsible, organized person along the way.
