Oh How Time Flies!

It's hard to believe that half of the school year is almost over. First semester is over and we're ready to start the third grading period already.  This is an extremely important part of the year as we are preparing for ISTEP comping up in just a few months. We will be continuing to learn new standards and concepts while reviewing previous concepts that gave students problems.
A few of the new math concepts students will be learning in the coming weeks include: solving problems with multiple variables, writing and solving inequalities and a major unit on multiple geometry standards.

As always, it's important to make sure children are getting plenty of sleep (8+ hours) and eating breakfast either at home or getting to school in time to eat in the cafeteria. Reviewing math facts at home, reviewing their agenda each night and ensuring homework is completed are a few ways you can do your part to ensure your child's success at school. Graduation Time!

It's hard to believe that the school year is almost over. Despite all of the standardized  testing, wild winter weather and all of those virtual makeup days, it's been a great year. I've truly enjoyed this year and I will miss the students and the relationships I've formed with them this past year. I wish everyone the best of luck at NJHS or whatever school you plan to attend next year. I hope you have learned not only a lot of math and science this year but also how to be a respectful, responsible, organized person along the way. Fractions, Decimals & Percents

We recently finished up a couple of standards (IN 6.2.8 & IN 6.5.10) that dealt with decimals and percentages of quantities involving real-world money application (tax, tips, discounts). We will now begin learning how to convert between decimals, percents and fractions (IN 6.1.4) and finding the whole given a part and the percent (6.RP.3c). These are very challenging concepts for sixth graders. We will be revisiting and reviewing these standards throughout the year to ensure that they are mastered before ISTEP. You can help your child at home by discussing common decimal/fraction conversions such as: (1/4,=.25), (1/2=.50), (3/4 = .75), (1/3 = .33), etc. Relating these concepts to everyday activities such as cooking and dealing with money can really help children begin to master this concept.

Astronomy Night

As we wrap up our science unit on Earth and Space Science, we are capping it off by hosting an Astronomy Night at Delaware School on Thursday, March 19 beginning at 6:30 PM. Representatives from the Evansville Astronomical Society will be here with a couple of high-powered telescopes that will allow us to view distant objects in the night sky. We hope to have a clear night so we are able to view the planets Jupiter and Venus, the Comet Lovejoy and more! We also plan to have some fun activities in the cafeteria while we wait for the sun to set before looking at the night sky. We hope you will join us on what is sure to be a fun and fascinating evening!
